Overview

Density without the tradeoffs

Storage growth rarely arrives on schedule, and rip-and-replace refresh cycles are expensive in both dollars and downtime. The WD Ultrastar Serv60+8 was engineered around a simple premise: give infrastructure teams a chassis that starts right-sized and scales in place. It ships with 24 x 12 TB-class HDDs installed today (288 TB usable at the array level before RAID or erasure coding overhead), while the enclosure itself supports up to 60 hard drives and 32 solid-state drives across a combined 68 bays — enough headroom to triple capacity without touching the rack unit count.

Underneath the sheet metal sits an Intel Xeon platform paired with a Serial Attached SCSI (SAS) backplane, the combination most storage architects reach for when they need predictable throughput across dozens of spinning and solid-state drives simultaneously. Whether the workload is nearline object storage, backup and archive targets, surveillance retention, media asset libraries, or a Ceph / ZFS / Storage Spaces Direct node, the Serv60+8 is built to sit at the center of it.

Where It Fits

Built for capacity-hungry workloads

Backup & Archive

A cost-effective landing zone for backup targets, long-term retention, and cold archive tiers where every TB counts.

Software-Defined Storage

SAS-connected density and SSD bays make this a strong node for Ceph, ZFS pools, or Storage Spaces Direct clusters.

Media & Surveillance

High-capacity nearline storage for media asset libraries, video archives, and long-retention surveillance footage.
