Why this box exists
Large campuses, data centers, and multi-site enterprises push web traffic volumes that smaller appliances simply cannot keep up with. The Web Security Gateway 1010 is Barracuda’s flagship model, purpose-built to sit at the edge of high-bandwidth networks and inspect every session — HTTP, HTTPS, and application traffic alike — without becoming the bottleneck. Where the mid-range 610 and 810 models top out well under 1 Gbps, the 1010 is engineered for multi-gigabit throughput, which is exactly where the 10 Gigabit Ethernet fiber NIC configuration earns its keep.
Fiber uplinks matter here for two reasons: distance and headroom. Copper 10GbE runs are distance-limited and more susceptible to interference in dense server rooms; fiber lets you route the appliance cleanly between core switches and internet-facing routers over longer spans while keeping full line-rate throughput available for peak traffic and SSL inspection overhead.

The fiber-NIC 1010 ships with fixed SFP optics on LC connectors, plus built-in hardware bypass so a power loss or failover event doesn’t take the whole link down with it.

Granular content policy across roughly 95 categories covers the vast majority of commonly visited sites, with SSL inspection available for encrypted traffic on selected domains and categories.
All-inclusive licensing
Advanced malware protection, antivirus, and the Barracuda Cloud Control management portal are included in the base subscription — no per-user add-on fees to budget around.
Off-network enforcement
The Barracuda Web Security Agent extends the same policy set to remote Windows and Mac laptops, so protection doesn’t stop at the office Wi-Fi.
